SAD NEWS – SCENARIO CO-FOUNDER SUSANNE EVEN (†) – August 22nd, 2026

2026-09-07

Susanne co-founded Scenario Journal in 2007, and it is thanks to her tireless commitment as co-editor that the journal has continued to flourish. Early this summer she was still determined to travel with us, to celebrate the journal's 20th anniversary at the 4th International Scenario Forum Conference, hosted by Soka University, Tokyo.

Susanne’s presence will be sorely missed.

As a brilliant scholar and passionate lecturer, Susanne helped shape the field of performative teaching and learning like few others. At the Department of Germanic Studies, University of Indiana, Bloomington, she set up one of the most innovative and successful language programmes in the United States. The photo below shows how, together with her beloved guide dog Oliver, she facilitated a memorable workshop at the Scenario conference, Trinity College Dublin, 2024.

She remains a beacon for us all.

We have been informed by Susanne's close friend Barbara Schmenk (University of Waterloo, Canada), that memorial celebrations are planned to take place in Germany this autumn, and Bloomington, USA, in spring 2027.

Please note that the next issue of Scenario will feature a personal tribute of the life and legacy of Susanne Even by Scenario co-founder Manfred Schewe.

MAY SUSANNE REST IN PEACE.

Please note that the Scenario conference 2027 will feature a special event in the memory of Susanne. Many in the Scenario community will have met Susanne, collaborated with her or have been influenced by her publications. We would appreciate if you left a note here on how Susanne has impacted on your personal and/or professional life. We aim to share these personal expressions of condolence with Susanne's family, with conference delegates and colleagues in the wider Scenario network.
